Disappearing act

As anyone can notice, it's been quite a while since we've posted on our blog. Since the new year, there have been many ups and downs in our lives and our blog was the first to take the back burner for a while. The Last Hurrah has gone through a bit of a lull as well, but with Spring approaching we are ready to start kicking things into high gear again!

We're very excited for all the new changes coming to The Last Hurrah!!!

Many people who know me will compare my tastes and demeanor to that of an old lady, and I'm okay with that! I am not ashamed to say I admire the finer things in life such as: over the top floral upholstered chairs, librarian-esque clothing, rice pudding, musicals, cat mania and anything decorated with pearls! ... speaking of which Pearl is the perfect name for my next cat (or poodle!) It's not exactly out the norm for my Grandmother to give me her old clothing... she's a stylish old lady and we're practically the same size!

Goose bumps

We had our first really freezing and windy, goose bump, teeth chattering photo shoot today. But we made it through (with little complaining and cursing) and you would never guess by looking at the pictures how cold we really were. And this is just the beginning of cold weather

Today we hit a milestone....500 sales!!! To us this is a great accomplishment that took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. We've had our ups and downs along the way but to get to this point makes it all worth it. Now that i'm feeling nostalgic, i'm posting my top 10 favorite pieces that have come and gone over the last year and a half. I often feel sad sending off certain items to new owners and wish that I had kept them for myself but if that were the case we wouldn't be anywhere near 500 sales. So a BIG thank-you to all our customers that have helped us get this far! We hope you love your dresses/skirts/blouses/shoes/etc. as much as we did.

Now on to the next 500!!!

This is Halloween!

I love Halloween!!! I spent the entire month of October planning out my costume, thinking about decorations and finding cool stencils for my pumpkins! This year, I came across a great website zombiepumpkins and for a small fee you can print out any of their huge selection of pumpkin stencils. I really wanted to challenge myself and carve something other than a "Jack" so I decided on doing "Chucky" from Child's Play. It took an hour to do and turned out amazing! I had been thinking about doing the Pee Wee's Playhouse theme for a while. I'm always up for a challenging and quirky costume so I went for Jambi the Genie and dressed Joe up as a very handsome Pee Wee Herman.

I finished our costumes in early October and got antsy for more to do. So since I was hosting a Halloween party, I decided to create some more characters from the show using some of my furniture. It definitely made for a good laugh for our party guests!

Cassandra and Todd decided to go out as Mary Poppins and Bert! It was a simple costume that needed the small details to be just right. She thrifted the hat and spray painted it black and then added some flowers to it. For Bert, the biggest problem was finding a chimney sweeper. We decided to buy a broom, take off the handle and then cut the bristles off and glue them around a piece of cardboard. Very intricate work!

The party was a blast and the responses to our costumes were outstanding. So bravo to us!!

I'm already thinking about next year!!!

it's almost here..

Halloween is almost here and we've been preoccupied with putting together costumes, pumpkin carving and eating candy! Add a laptop battery problem to the mix and you have the reason why we've been neglectful to both shop and blog again. But I'm happy to announce that the battery is fixed, the costumes are done and the pumpkins are carved (although we're still eating candy!) we have a fresh batch of clothes ready to make their debut to The Last Hurrah.

It makes our hearts go pitter patter when we find a cute little owl figurine or owl jewelry. Remembering back, our Aunt used to collect owls. Her collection had a very 1970's look with a huge selection of the wide eyed birds in every shape and form. As time went on, the owl look became considerably uncool so her owls probably ended up being donated to Goodwill. In the last couple of years owls have made a huge comeback and all we have are the memories of this wonderful collection. Here are some owl items at the last hurrah!

Halloween is just around the corner! I can't believe how fast time is flying, last halloween seems like yesterday. And here we are, a year later with less than a month to go till the big day! I'm not one for picking out a pre-packaged costumes from Wal-mart, where's the fun in that?! Halloween is the perfect time to let your creative juices flow and create something fun and unique! On our thrifting adventures, we always find items that we can envision being a super costume, here are some of our ideas this year....

You can never go wrong with the 80's on Halloween, that's my motto! This hot pink 80's party dress would work perfectly with a crimped side pony tail.

Locke Street fun!

We did it! We survived our first ever festival and was it ever fun, exhausting but fun! We were very lucky to have perfect weather and amazing support from our friends and family that made our day go perfectly. Thanks again to our two "employees of the day", our little sister Monika and the always wonderful Jentine from My Edit. We couldn't of done it without these two.

Now that it's done, we can't wait to get The Last Hurrah back up and running. Stay tuned for lots of new items!!!

On one of our antique market excursions, we came across this Eaton's Fall/Winter catalogue from 1965 and we couldn't put it down! It's so neat looking through the pages and pages of adorable clothing but also frustrating that we can't pick up the phone and order them!

One of the interesting things to look at are the prices, $16.98 for a party dress!

These ruffled blouses and pleated skirts make our mouths water.

This is just one page of the many pages of great hats!

I will pay some serious cash to anyone who can find me one of these hats!

On another note, the last hurrah is on vacation! We've closed down the shop until next week to get us ready for the Locke Street Festival. We will reopen on Sept. 14th with tons of new items!!!

Though it may seem like our blog is dying a slow death due to lack of exciting entries as well as the lack of Fall clothing popping up in the shop, we assure you it's only because we've been busy, REALLY BUSY! The Locke Street Festival is creeping closer and there's much do! I didn't realize how much work it would take to prepare everything to travel the whole 2 blocks to Locke St. But i'm happy to say that everything (well mostly everything) is done and ready to go...and before schedule!

First we had to put price tags on everything which took a very long while. We're so lucky to have found these super cute custom tags from Pacokeco.

Then we had to fold everything nicely into bins.

(and these don't even include the dresses!)

And lastly, after many car trips, we'll get everything to Locke St.

(Thank goodness we'll have the boys to do the hard work)

In June, we wrote about all the back drops in the alley we use for our pictures

(read about it here!)

This week while taking some pictures, we were so excited to see that one of the houses in the alley had undergone a makeover! What was once a boring grey and somewhat dilapidated shack had turned into an adorable purple beauty with a CIRCA 1895 sign and prettiest yellow flowers. We jumped at the chance to take some trial pictures to see if it would work as an official Last Hurrah back drop.

Thank goodness the owners didn't open the door to see our photo shoot on their front porch!

Oooohh Baby!

It's the year of the baby! We have so many friends having babies this year (is there something in the water?!?) and with babies comes baby showers. It's always fun to go shopping for a baby, especially because neither of us have any. The other day I was showing a "Mommy" friend some cute clothes I bought one of the new babies and she started laughing and said "I can clearly tell you don't have any children!!" When I asked her why she told me no parent in their right mind would spend $25 on a onesie. But how can I resist when they are so cute!

Grow little garden grow

So far, this summer has been a hectic one for us, unfortunately not so much with the last hurrah stuff (we've been lacking these past couple of weeks), but more with our own little side projects. My Dad and I decided to rent a garden plot in a community garden and grow an assortment of veggies. Gardening is something we've never done before and boy I didn't realize how much time and commitment it is! But I feel so proud because our little garden is flourishing!!

And it all started with some dirt.....

this was taken after hours of weeding that gave me a stiff back for a week afterwards...ugh!

but it was worth it to see my little cauliflower...

Our Dad, Wolfgang (who is obviously very German) has always been quite obsessed with soccer and more importantly GERMAN soccer. This means that the World Cup is an important time in our family. It means flags on our cars and rarely having conversation that doesn't involve talk of the game. In celebration of Germany's last win against England and their next win against Argentina (hopefully!), we dug through our piles of clothes to color co-ordinate the German flag (Yes, we're a little bit cocky and might have too much time on our hands!)

Dream a little dream

The other night I had my first ever thrift shopping panic dream.

I'm in a thrift store and I find the most AMAZING vintage blouse. It's sheer, nude colored with little black polka dots, puffy short sleeves with black piping on the ruffled edges (I have never seen this blouse before in my life but I feel like I know it seam to seam.) I try it on and it fits perfectly so now I NEED TO BUY THIS BLOUSE! I head to cash register and the man at the counter tells me that they are closed and he has already counted his till. WHAT!?!? I beg and plead with him and all he can do for me is put it on hold for tomorrow. At that point I pick up his stapler and a few other items on his desk and whip them at his head. Let's just say the rest of the dream ended quite violently.

I really hope this doesn't become a deja vu moment.

Not only is Manny an awesome human being, he's also a very talented artist and we were so excited for him when he showcased his work this month at the James St. N. Art Crawl.

Here are some pieces by Manny (and by no means our favorites because it's too hard to pick)....

A couple of years ago we commissioned Manny to do this David Bowie Aladdin Sane painting (I'm slightly DB obsessed) and it's the focal point of our room.

This weekend was the James St. N. art crawl and we had two important reasons to go. The first reason was MANNY TRINH (in which we will post about very soon!) and the second was WHITE ELEPHANT!

White Elephant is an adorable little vintage shop owned by Hollie & Jane, who we are lovingly envious of. This shop has been a staple on the James St. N circuit for a while but they've just moved locations to a bigger and better space across the street and this was their GRAND OPENING!

We absolutely adore the new shop and they inspire us to take the leap and open up a shop of our very own. While we think it would be impossible to accomplish it, they help us realize that it is possible. We'll see, we'll see.....

The Good Word

Sometimes all it takes to brighten your day are a few kind words from a stranger! I woke up today kinda hungover, kinda missing my boyfriend (he's away for a week @ Bonnaroo, pout) and kinda uninspired. But a great little message from fellow Etsian Jennifer just made my day!

"I just wanted to tell you that I really appreciate finding a vintage shop that is not outrageously over-priced. You have cute stuff and I hearted a few things. I clicked on you through craftcult, so that's where the credit is due. I will be purchasing as soon as I sell something...hopefully today!
Thanks! I don't normally convo other sellers just for that, but I honestly am so sick of the vintage items that are unreasonably priced. Have a great weekend!"

It's awesome to know that what we set out to do in the first place - selling great on-trend vintage clothing at an affordable, and wallet friendly price - hasn't gone unnoticed! It was one of our strongest visions for what we wanted to accomplish with selling vintage. It makes me even more excited to continue on the path The Last Hurrah is taking us! I've Got My Eye On You

Every once in a while I come across a dress that I can't stop staring at. There is no particular reason why, just something about it strikes me as aesthetically pleasing and I really, really want it. Although deep down I know I'll probably never wear it, I will tease myself by bookmarking it and going back to it whenever I need that little pang of clothing lust!

and well this dress from BettyJeanVintage does it for me. Like really, really does it for me! I would consider altering off the last layer because I'm too short and it might not be the most flattering length... but then it would be a mini dress to die for. I will continue looking at it until the dreaded THIS ITEM HAS BEEN SOLD confronts me in red and I will spend the rest of my days secretly hating the girl who did actually buy it. Or maybe I will fold and purchase it myself. Hmmm only time and my self control will tell!

When we first started the last hurrah, one of our biggest setbacks was where to take our pictures. We tried to do the "indoor against the wall" shot at my house but clear wall space proved to be difficult to find. We tried Cassandra's apartment that had a huge clear wall with pretty hardwood floors but the lighting was awful. We came to the conclusion that outdoor pictures not only looked way better but we had so many great options for back drops. My house has great red brick and a large covered porch for those rainy days and it's right beside an alley that has very unique houses hidden in it. Every photo shoot we try to use a variety of backdrops:

The good ol' porch!

The neighbors house in a light cream colored brick and some random stains on the wall. This ones tricky because to the left is an ugly yellow thing covering wire and to the right is a grate. Nothing a little skilled cropping can't handle. We choose this spot often because it's close to the front door for those cold days!!

One of our favorite spots!! This is one of the houses in the alley. The house is so funky and we think the backdrop makes the pictures look European. The alley is very narrow so when a car comes through, we do the "Car!" yell and squeeze against the wall.

This green house is next door to the yellow one and we've just used it for the first time on our last photo shoot. The reason is because a car is usually parked in this spot. Too bad because we LOVE how it turned out!

This is a brick building near the end of the alley that is so old and beautiful. We've heard it was once an old orphanage and it's haunted! Now it's an apartment building. We like this spot because the change in brick. We don't like this spot because it's a little bit of walk away.

We've only used this spot once, the side of someone's garage. We like the grey brick but the area smelled of dog poo so we haven't gone back!!

I can not remember for the life of me how I stumbled upon FashionCan, but once I did, I found myself religiously checking back each season to check out new collections, and scoring the "sale" section for great deals. Basically, it's an e-commerce site which runs and manages online boutiques for Canadian designers, showcasing them all in one spot. Great Canadian designers such as House of Spy, Valerie Dum aine, Birds of North America and my personal favorite, Snoflake by Debbie Sutton! Many of them producing organic and eco-friendly clothing. And the best part (or perhaps the worst depending how you look at it) each one accepts Interac Online! If you don't know about Interac Online... well let just say it's easy access to your bank account and potentially dangerous!

Sugar Sugar

So I have a problem... I am really tired of spooning sugar right out the clumpy bag, that we just so happen to keep on the highest shelf in the cupboard. Maybe I'm lazy, I don't know, but I think it's time to invest in a sugar bowl. That way it can sit front and center in my little breakfast nook! Fun times in Cuba!

So the excitement is over! Our week vacation in Cuba came and went... my friend Chantelle is now married, my sisters and I enjoyed a lovely week of sister bonding (or fighting? haha) and I came to the unfortunate conclusion of a sun allergy :( (in the medical office, $200 later, and sun dermatitis it is) Between madly missing our boyfriends and my sisters playing ping pong with the staff members, it was a gorgeous wedding ceremony! I think I might be planning an Alaskan cruise for my next vacation though!

Sarah and I had vowed not to check the shop while away, so we could come home and be greeted by tons of sales. Yeah, that didn't happen! We checked almost every day. But good news was with the $10 sale we offered for the week.... the shop was booming and we cleared out tons of old stock! Amidst the Cuban heat we forgot to celebrate our 1 year anniversary on the proper day... but drinks were definitely had. A huge thank you to all our customers making us so very successful during our first year!

Now that we're back we are looking forward to putting more focus on our "new shop" look (like our new logo???) and getting even more great, vintage pieces out there to enjoy another last hurrah!

clothing party part deux

This Saturday, we had our second annual Clothing Party! It was a blast, but my what a different experience it was from our last clothing party (read about it here). Our first party seemed to be more of a drunken house party that just happened to have vintage clothes for sale. This time around, it was all about the clothes, and less about the party. Which was great, because it really showed us that people in our city are really excited about vintage clothing.

We did the same set up as last time, with a few improvements.

I made my famous Sangria, which was a hit as always, and my favorite chocolate zucchini cupcakes.

It was great to see a lot of friends that came to our last party and even more new attendees. We were thrilled to have Jentine (from the fabulous my edit blog) swing by, in which she scored our adorable tutu dress amongst other things! Our new friend Erin (from the Dear Edna blog and etsy shop) came for some shopping and showed off some of her goods, so cute!!

After everyone was all shopped out, only the die hards were left to party, and did we ever! We headed out to a party hosted by our friends from Flatspot at a local bar where we did some hardcore dancing! It's probably a good thing my camera battery died so we weren't able to document the debauchery!

Thanks again to all our friends that came! It was a lot of work but so worth it. We're already looking forward to planning the next one.

Spring has sprung!

Countdown to Cuba!

The last hurrah is going on VACATION! In mid May, Cassandra and I are heading to Cuba for a well deserved vacation as well as a friends wedding. Since it's less than 2 months away and we're starting to have warmer days, we have our sights set on summer wear! How excited were we when we found these super cute vintage bathing suits! Our spring/summer collection of vintage clothes is growing by the day and we can't wait to start posting them!

Just a month short of our 1 year anniversary, we are hosting our second ever open house CLOTHING PARTY! We're super excited to swing our doors open once again for all you lovely, thrifty ladies! I'm not all that into Valentines day, but it's always fun to post with a theme. This year, my husband has a secret surprise for me that requires me to be out of the house between 6-7:30pm. I'm guessing he's going to attempt to cook me dinner, which is really sweet because cooking is not exactly his forte. For him, I've decided to finally try and make chocolate zucchini cupcakes. This is a photo of what they should turn out like

I've always wanted to try to make them because they're one of my favorite deserts. However, I'm not much of a baker so hopefully they turn out ok!

Tea party

Last week, Meg from kitestring.ca asked us if we could help style an outfit for a promotional video they were producing. The style she was looking for was "tea party" so we spent some time going through our inventory (that's not as simple as it sounds cause there's ALOT!) and came up with a few ensembles that we thought would make cute tea party outfits.

We were really excited to see which one was chosen for the video shoot. Today, they put up the video! The outfit turned out great and the video is super funny!

Today Cassandra and I spent the afternoon in one of our fav vintage shops. It's run by a little old lady who has an AMAZING collection of anything and everything in vintage attire. We visit her ever so often and she always remembers "The Last Hurrah " girls because we run around her shop like kids in a candy store! Her friend (an equally old little lady) is there pretty much every time we visit and the two of them just hang out and chat to customers. We joke that this will be us one day. I'm pretty positive it will!

For some strange we reason we started singing "Loving You" By Minnie Riperton and it stuck in our heads for the entire day. It sort of became the song-of-the-day so I thought I would add it to my post for all to enjoy. I just dare you to try to hit the high note. It's hard, we tried all day!

When it rains it pours

For some strange reason (i wonder if other 'thrifters' find this as well) I go through phases of finding particular vintage pieces. For example, one day I found an awesome metal clip belt at a second hand shop, the next day at a different shop, I spent some time looking around and just before I left, there in the corner I spied with my little eye ANOTHER metal clip belt, this one BETTER than the last! And for the next weeks following, I continued to find cute metal clip belts of all shapes and sizes until I'm almost sick of them!

This seems to happens to me often. I had a boot binge in the fall. Last month, I collected a dozen gorgeous vintage hats, and so on.

On a recent trip to the antique market circuit, we found nothing but cute jewelry pieces. So, we stocked up! Here are some of our finds:

Currently, I am SERIOUSLY lusting over a classic vintage, pinup style red one piece bathing suit for our trip to Cuba in May. Specifically, this sexy number over at Victoria's Secret. I had no clue they had so many cute bathing suits / beach wear items!

How sexy, yet totally classy is this bathing suit?? I'm lusting badly.... but not enough for the $170 price tag. (sigh)

I did find this similar suit over at Modcloth for $100 less.

I can just picture myself donning one these suits with my big sun hat and sunglasses, hiding under the wonderful shade of a palm tree sipping some fruity drink and flipping through the pages of some chick lit in Cuba!! I just might crack and purchase.....

I also found this website, Retrodress, where they have a large variety of vintage inspired bathing suits, claiming to be "The Perfect Swimsuit" at around $65 a pop. Tempting!

It's our first!

Like we mentioned in our New Years post, we wanted to make our blog a little bit more fun so we decided to do our first ever outfit post! We had a day planned for some serious work to be done i.e. posting items, taking pictures, organizing, etc. However, in true Sarah & Cassandra fashion, we sat around creeping on Facebook, googled Heidi Montag's before and after plastic surgery (which you should check out by the way, so gross!), had some pancakes and smoothies, and then decided to go out thrift shopping. This is a very typical "day of work" for us. But before we left we decided to quickly run to the alley beside my house where there are the most adorable hidden houses and in which we frequently use for The Last Hurrah backdrops. We took a few pictures, which was more difficult than taking photos for the shop because I really needed to watch my "muppet mouth" (I'll explain more in a future post).

Every item in this outfit is thrifted, except for the tights. None of them are posted on The Last Hurrah as of yet, they're still in our "to do" pile but we will have the blouse, vest, and brooch up in the near future so check back often if you like them. The boots, tights, and purse are from my own collection.

you've come a long way baby

I finally did it! I quit smoking on Wednesday and haven't looked back! I've quit smoking many many times, the last time for over two years but I somehow always get sucked into it again. It only takes one drunken night which leads to bad judgement and then i'm up to half a pack a day within a week. My friend the cigarette and I have a complicated love/hate relationship (other smokers probably feel the same).

But in any case, I'm happy to report that I've (almost) made it through the first week, which tends to be the hardest for me. For those smokers that want to quit, may I recommend an AMAZING book by Allen Carr called

The Easy Way to Quit Smoking.

It really makes quitting easy and it works everytime for me!

Since smoking is on my mind, I spent some time searching for vintage smoking ads and came across some really neat ones. It's amazing how romantic smoking used to be portrayed.

One of our new years resolutions for 2010 was to make the last hurrah stronger than last year. With that being said, I finally took the time to go through our inventory to organize the pieces we still have yet to take pictures of and post. I was quite shocked to find that...

a) We only have about 1/4 of the amount of great quality stuff posted right now.

b) I have a serious thrift shopping addiction because no matter how much stuff I have I still want MORE!

and c) I'm on the cusp of being eligible to apply to be on Hoarders! As i'm growing quite attached to a lot of the items we buy, my closet is doubling each week.

We've committed ourselves to taking a ton of pictures this weekend so hopefully that will help to free up some space. And I vow not to step foot in a thrift shop until this is done!!! (I can just see Cassandra rolling her eyes!!)

In the meantime, we have quite a few new items that have just been posted and more to come in the next few days.

500 days of Zooey

I just recently watched 500 days of Summer, probably the cutest movie of the year. But 2 things occurred to me while watching this movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is all grown up now and SO cute (does he not resemble a young Heath Ledger??) and secondly, Zooey Deschanel has amazing vintage style! This led me to do a quick Google search on her and was amazed at all the adorable pictures of her out there.

SO the holidays have come and gone and we're so excited for this coming year...2010!!

Some of our new years resolutions:

1. Make our blog more fun!!

2. Make the last hurrah better than last year

3. Actually save some money for our next clothing party & the clothing show

4. To quit smoking (Sarah)

5. To eat organic (well at least 75% of the time, unless McDonalds goes green)

6. To get our bodies fit to wear bikinis in CUBA (5 months to go!)

We could go on but we wont! As for our New Years Eve festivities, we took it very low key this year and parted ways before the countdown. I hosted a fun little games night and then headed to a party where we sang the night away with Singstar...so fun!! Cass joined us for a couple of hours but then opted to go home and spend a romantic evening with her beau. All in all, a great night was had by all and we are looking forward to what exciting things 2010 holds for us and the last hurrah.

Baby it's cold outside...

Since the beginning of The Last Hurrah, we've become accustomed to taking our pictures outside. It's been great all summer & fall and we never really thought about what we would do once it got cold outside. Well, now it's cold, really cold! We tested out a few blank wall spots in both of our houses but it just didn't seem right. So we've decided (at least for now) to brave the cold air and continue taking our pictures outside. They didn't turn out too bad, you can't even tell we're posing in below freezing weather with a nasty windchill. I guess it's the Canadian in us!

So, halloween is officially over, which is sad because it's my FAVORITE holiday!

We has so much fun working on our costumes this year. Neither of us believe in buying pre-made costumes. Halloween is all about being creative and hunting for just

the right pieces to make it work.

Cassandra was up in the air about her costume, she had a few ideas of what she wanted to be, but it wasn't until Sarah found this cute little polka dot dress in a thrift store that she knew she wanted to go out as her childhood hero, Minnie Mouse!

Joe and I always go out as a "couple" costume and this year I had the idea of going out as the kids from E.T. months and months ago. I always try to make my costume exactly right, however after scouring every thrift store in the GTA, I still couldn't find the chocolate brown overalls Gertie wore. So, I settled for this dark green corduroy dress, no one seemed to notice.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM THE LAST HURRAH!!!

In some ways it's a sad time of year. We say goodbye to the sun, the beach, cute bathing suits, and sun dresses. Enter the cold, drab weather, darkness at 5pm, and the sudden want of hibernation. However, Fall fashion make it a season to be excited for and we've picked out a few of our fave vintage finds for the season.

Bring on the leather, tweed, earth tones, and our favorite.....boots!!

This season, we're feeling very "fringey!" (is that a word?!?)

We've been finding so many great pieces with fringe details and have fallen in love with the looks....

This dress is too cute for words...so cute that Sarah had to get some wear out of it before it was posted and wore it to a beautiful Fall wedding.

As you can see it was definitely "Bust a Move" worthy!!

happy that someone else will get the chance to feel wonderful in it!!

Nightdreamer magazine

One Saturday in August, Cassandra and I, after spending many hours working on the shop, decided to take a break and head down to one of our fave falafel joints for a quick bite. Upon entering, I went to order and Cassandra quickly excused herself to the bathroom. When she returned, she gave her order and then we just chit chatted away. A few minutes went by when the kind woman behind the counter quietly mentioned to Cassandra that her skirt was up in the back and tucked into her underwear for the whole world to see. In utter embarrassment, Cassandra quickly fixed her skirt, thanked the woman, and looked around with her red face to see if anyone noticed. No one in the restaurant seemed to show any signs of interest in her rear end, so we ended the moment in a giggle.

Embarrassing moment? Yes! But why mention it? Well, moments later, while paying for our delicious falafels, was our first encounter with Nightdreamer Magazine. Sitting on a news stand beside the ever popular, View Magazine, it caught our interest from the vibrant, colourful cover and curiosity had us pick one up and flip through the pages.

The glossy pages were adorned with articles about local musicians, artists and had several pages dedicated to candid photos of stylish club goers out and about in the Hamilton nightlife scene. And that was that, we grabbed our food, put the magazine back on the shelf, and continued with our day.

Fast forward to the end of September. Cassandra, while routinely checking her Facebook, noticed a new message. To her surprise, it was a message from a writer from Nightdreamer magazine asking if she could write a piece about us. We were excited and, in a way, honoured that our little etsy shop was being noticed and quickly agreed to the project. She sent us some questions, we answered them. Come mid-October, we had yet to see the new issue of the magazine, until Cassandra, out for some drinks at the local bar and grill, noticed that vibrant, colourful cover yet again sitting on a news stand. She shrilled with glee and quickly sifted through the pages. And there it was! Our little article about our little shop.

The Last Hurrah Clothing Party

Sooo on Saturday, August 22nd, Sarah and I (Cassandra) attempted to throw our first official open house and clothing party for thelashurrah! Not only to open our doors to local customers, but to help clear out our quickly growing pile of vintage clothing. We were excited and marveled in how much excitement we experienced by simply hanging and folding clothing in Sarah's tiny living room, our makeshift "store" for the night.

Initially, we had invited only a select group of girls afraid that the tiny apartment would too quickly overflow with eager ladies looking for a thrifty deal from our way cool shop! Yes, we were way over confident and way over enthusiastic! Sadly, on the day of the party one by one we received telltale signs that perhaps, our AMAZING vintage party might be a dud. Text messages, facebook messages... unreturned phonecalls "sorry, can't make it..." soon we knew what we were going to hear each time the phone buzzed.

For a moment there, we both sat slumped in chairs with our faces drowned in defeat. The kitchen table was adorable with fresh pink flowers and the vintage fondue set, complete with matching fondue forks, borrowed from our father. Beatrice the bust form had been stuffed into the car and transported from one apartment to another, and dressed up in some of our favorite vintage pieces. Our business cards were laid out meticulously on the counter. But now we were doubting that this was even a good idea in the first place. We decided at that moment, that it didn't even matter anyways! We had a blast setting up and if anything, we both knew that actually having a physical shop one day, where we could surround ourselves with clothing racks and displays and the prospect of selling the great things we've found, made it all worth while... right?!

But to make a long story short... people came! And we broke even! So thank you, thank you, thank you (to the last minute invites) and everyone who showed up for our (clothing) party!! We did end up letting boys in... actually they kinda saved the day! (THANKS TODD!)

All in all, the night was a success. Plenty of alcohol was consumed, and pretty vintage clothing was bought and worn!

Overall, we had a blast and can't wait to do it all over again in the Spring!
